LANCE CORPORAL WILLIAM GEORGE JONES

He was Born in 1896 at Grove Common, Picts Cross
He was educated at Sellack School
In 1911, the family were living at Upper Grove Common, Sellack and William was a gardener
In April 1917, he enlisted in the Monmouthshire Regiment having been previously working as a shepherd
In October 1917, he joined his regiment in France
In March 1918 he was transferred to the newly formed 9th Battalion Machine Gun Corps.
The best, fittest and brightest were recruited to the newly formed machine gun battalions.
He was promoted to Lance Corporal
On the 19th & 20th July 1918, there position came under heavy artillery bombardment as part of the German Spring Offensive
L/Cpl William Jones was Killed in Action on 20th July 1918, age 21
He is buried in Caestre Military Cemetery which is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission
His CGWC certificate of honour records he was the son of George and Sarah Jones of Upper Grove Common, Sellack
He is commemorated on the Sellack War Memorial
