PRIVATE WILFRED LEWIS
1st Battalion, Kings Shropshire Light Infantry
He was Born in 1896 near Taunton
In 1901, he was living at ‘Gutters’ in Sellack with his mother, who was born in Bridstow, and his father was away in the army.
He was educated at Sellack School
In 1911, Wilfred was living with his mother at ‘Wellands’, Picts Cross where he was a labourer on a farm.
At the outbreak of war, he enlisted on 20th August 2014 into the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry at Hereford
He was posted to the 1st Battalion and deployed after training to France in March 1915
On 27th September 1915, he died of wounds in the General Hospital in Rouen, age 20
He is buried in the Sr Sever Cemetery, Rouen, which is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission
His CWGC certificate of honour records he was the son of George and Elizabeth Lewis of Upper Grove, Sellack
He is commemorated on the Sellack War Memorial
