PRIVATE HENRY SHAW
5th Battalion, King’s Shropshire Light Infantry
He was born in 1877 in Hentland
In 1891 the family were living at Peterstow
In August 1893, age 18, he enlisted in the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry
In 1905 he was discharged from the army having completed his period of engagement
In 1911 he was labouring on a farm in Sellack
In 1914, he was called up as a member of the Reserve and enlisted again with the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry, initially in a training role
In August 1915 he was deployed to join the 5th Battalion in France at Ypres
He was Killed in Action on 25th September 1915, age 38
The Battalion suffered 441 casualties, 55% of the 786 who started the day
His body was never recovered
He is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial and the Sellack War Memorial
