PRIVATE (GEORGE) HENRY EDWARDS
1st Battalion, 1st Herefordshire Regiment
He was Born in 1893 in Hoarwithy
In 1911, the family were still living in Hoarwithy when he was a Thrashing Machine Worker
He joined the Herefordshire Regiment early in the war
On 9th August 1915, the 1st Herefordshire Regiment landed at Suvla Bay on the Gallipoli peninsular
They dug in and occupied trenches under enemy fire and bombardment. In November 1915 their trenches flooded followed by freezing temperatures causing trench foot and frost bite. They were evacuated to Egypt on 12th December 1915
On 6th November 1917, Private Edwards was shot in the chest during the offensive to take Gaza from Ottoman forces
He was sent back to hospital in England
On 4th February 1918, he died of his wounds at the 2nd Southern General Hospital in Bristol, age 25
He is buried in Hoarwithy Churchyard
His CGWC certificate of honour records he was the son of Thomas and Annie Edwards of Red Rail, Hoarwithy
He is commemorated on the Hoarwithy and Sellack War Memorials
