Arthur Edwards also known as Pat, was born in 1923 in Sellack.
He enlisted into the Royal Navy during WW2. During his service he was on the HMS Prince of Wales, a King George V-Class battleship. The HMS Prince of Wales was attacked and sunk on the 10th December 1941 off the coast of Malaya, from a Japanese air attack. Arthur survived this attack.
The next ship we are aware of Arthur serving on was the HMS Whittaker K580, a Captain-Class Frigate. This ship was transferred from the USA to the UK in January 1944. It served on escort and patrol duty and also supported the Normandy invasion.
Whilst on patrol, HMS Whittaker K580 was torpedoed by a German submarine on 1st November 1944 off the Malin Head on the North coast of Ireland. Of the 186 crew, 79 died, Arthur being one of them. His body was recovered from the Irish coastline and he is buried in the churchyard at Sellack with his father.
